Our New Hospital

Almost a million square feet of hospital facilities are rising on 32 acres at the corner of 4th Avenue and 1st Street, on our side of St. Catharines.

The project is 65% complete as of July, 2011.  Design began in 2007 followed by two years of stakeholder consultations.  By May 2009, the contractors had trucked away some 12,000 loads of soil, installed 5,000 tons of steel rebar and cement and installed 280 miles of electrical conduit. On August 19, 2009, the history of the old St. Catharines General Hospital was buried as legacy into the first cement footing, beneath the future Diagnostic Imaging area.  As of December 2009, the rise of the complex could be viewed by web cam (see link below).

The new Health Complex, which includes the  Walker Family Cancer Centre, has plans to finish construction by November 26, 2011 and open in spring of 2013 with a staff of 200. Plenary Health Niagara is the project managing contractor with 85% of the work-force from the Niagara region.

New Hospital Complex for Niagara Peninsula

Acute care will acommodate 375 beds, with 80% of rooms as single patent, to improve infection control.  The ER will be supported by two inpatient towers. This health complex will provide  acute care for St. Catharines, Thorold, Niagara-on-the-Lake and surrounding area.  Regional specialized services will including  dialysis, cancer care , longer-term mental health and cardiac care.

By July, 2011, the contractors were working indoors and had begun landscaping the exterior. Crews were widening the roads of 1st Street Louth and 4th Avenue.

The big question for Heritage Village is whether  our ambulances will go east, to this new complex, or favour going west, to West Lincoln Memorial or Hamilton ?
